Sometimes, even when you know that you shouldn’t tell your child to stop crying, it’s hard to know what to say instead.
When we tell them to “stop crying”, we dismiss their feelings in a way that says they are not important, silly and annoying.
For children to learn how to regulate their emotions, and to trust us with their problems and feelings, then we need to comfort and reassure them that crying is ok.
Here are 5 things to say instead of “stop crying”:
- It’s ok to be sad.
- I’m listening
- I will help you work it out
- That was really hard/scary/sad
- It doesn’t feel fair
